Vanity
A person I work with (at my other job) purchased a unique sink a while back and was looking for a vanity to use it with. When they couldn’t find one that was the size/style they were looking for, they came to me. Working together, this is what we came up with. The base is made up of some very interesting pine and the top is made from birds eye maple. The base is finished with polyurethane and the top is finished with Odies Oil.
Barn Doors
Some very close friends of our recently purchased a new house and had the need for some barn doors. I quickly said: “I can do that”. In the house they purchased, the previous owner had left a pile of cherry hard wood flooring. My friends asked if that was of any use and I said: “I can use that for your barn doors”. Well, here’s how they turned out. I hope you like them.
Breakfast Bar
This breakfast bar was phase II of a 3 phase project. Phase I was the rainbow table (https://purplepigwoodshop.com/tables/), phase II was the breakfast bar and phase III, a corner bench. This breakfast bar is (like both other phases) made out of walnut. The top is 9 feet long and 1 3/4 inches thick with an epoxy finish on the top. This project was relativity easy but the epoxy did provide a challenge. I also discovered (which shouldn’t have been a surprise) there there is always SO MUCH to learn about woodworking and I’m looking forward to that.
Corner Bench
This corner bench was part 3 of a 3 phase project. As with part 1 (the Rainbow Table) and part 2 (Breakfast Bar) the Corner Bench is made from solid walnut. This bench goes around 2 sides of the Rainbow Table. It measures 92 inches long on one side and 75 inches long on the other. The seat is 18 inches high and has an angled kick plate. It’s finished with an oil urethane top coat.
Bathroom vanity
The bathroom vanity in the master bedroom of this house really needed to be replaced but the owner didn’t want to rip everything out, re-do the sink, plumbing, counter top etc. and asked me it I had any ideas. I simply built a new face frame over the existing cabinets, built new doors and installed. This vanity is made out of curly maple. The trick to this project was the finish. Because of the nature of the grain in the curly maple, no ordinary finish will work. I found a recipe using boiled linseed oil, shellac and varnish that makes the character of this wood really pop.
