Walnut Coffee Table
Walnut coffee table. Made of walnut pieces. The top measures 42″ x 18.5″ x 1.5″ thick and is roughly 18″ tall. It has walnut legs and a walnut shelf.

Mahagony Top with Kittinger Legs
I got a few coffee table legs from my Father-in-law who used to work for Kittinger Furniture in Buffalo NY. These legs were made out of mahogany so I made a mahogany top out of scraps. It measures roughly 18 x 42 x 18.

Anchors Away
While at the Clothesline Arts Festival this year (2024) a customer asked me to build him a coffee table similar to one I had on display. He had specific dimensions he was looking for and wanted darker colors, no maple and such. He also wanted a shelf underneath. I was a little skeptical about only using darker colors, but I like the way this turned out. He supplied the anchor legs.

Coffee tables
I have 4 coffee table tops currently available. You can pick the top, then pick the legs. The first 2 are made with Black Limba, the 3rd is Tiger Wood and the last is made with various types of wood. The leg options follow at the end. Note that not all leg options with work with all tops (the tops may be too narrow for the legs). All leg options came from Flowyline Design.

Oak coffee table with 3 legs
Seems like I’ve been making a lot of tables out of scraps lately. This one is all oak. It was originally for a different project, but that project didn’t work out quite right. I wasn’t sure what to do this this tabletop but around the same time I saw a video on how to make these legs. It looked pretty simple to do and I wanted to give it a try, just for fun. Afterwords I decided that this top looked pretty good with those legs.

Random pieces of cherry coffee table with pipe legs
After building a couple of projects out of this cherry that I got in a auction, I had a lot of random sized pieces. The cherry I got in that auction was different than other cherry I’ve used in the past. It had a certain characteristic (there’s a name for it but I can’t think of it right now). I didn’t want to mix up this cherry with the other cherry I had so I needed to find a way to use this cherry. Here is the result.

Waterfall table with matching side tables
Every year we take a vacation to a place called Morning Side Camps and Cottages in Minerva NY which is located in the upper part of New York State in the Adirondack region. A few years back I bought some white pine slabs from the owner (check out other parts of the site for other projects I’ve done with these slabs). The slabs came from a tree outside of cabin 8 that they had cut down quite a while back. This year the owner said he had some maple lumber and asked if I was interested in it. Well, I was interested, and part of the deal was that I would use one of the slabs I bought a few years ago and build him a waterfall table. If I had enough lumber, I would also make him a side table. Well, I had enough lumber for 2 side tables. The tops of these 3 pieces all came from one slab. The legs came from leftovers from another project using lumber from the same tree.

Multi species with metal legs IV
Seems like I always have scraps that I bring myself to burn so why not use them up.

Multi species with metal legs III
Tried another multi species table but this time used some bigger parts. Each piece of this table is a different type of wood. Starting in the upper left
Bloodwood / Purpleheart / Chechen
Yellowheart / Paduk / Ambrosha Maple
Ipe / Canarywood
Chakte Viga / Hard (sugar) Maple / English Walnut
Zebrawood / Wenge
Cedar / Mahogany
Black Walnut / Cherry

Multi species with metal legs II
This is the second table I build with scraps. The first one went very quickly so I figured I’d use up some more stuff that was lying around. I think there at least 13 different types of wood in this table.

Walnut slab with shelf
2 walnut slab tables with shelves

Multi species coffee table
This table has a little of everything, walnut, maple, spalted maple, oak, cherry, butternut, mahogany, purpleheart and more. Most of the materials came out of my scrap bins which makes the material cost low, however, there was a lot of labor to put it together. I was tempted to make the legs but wanted to get this table done in time for a show that was coming up, so I ended up getting them online. I’m glad I did as I really like the look.

Cherry TV Stand / Coffee Table
I made this to be a TV stand. It could also be used as a coffee table, but it may be a little too tall. It’s made of cherry with the top being one solid piece (not several glued together). The legs are metal and were made by a friend of mine, John Gloss (check out his Facebook page at “Gloss Wood Wonders”).

Walnut with wooden legs and epoxy top
When I was at the Fairport Canal Days arts festival (in 2023), a woman saw the walnut TV stand (which could be used as a coffee table) and really liked it. She went home to take some measurements to see if it would fit in the spot she wanted to put it. She came back the next day to buy it but I had already sold it. That’s okay, I just built her a new one. Like the original, this is made from walnut. Both the top and the shelf are solid pieces (not multiple pieces of wood, glued together). It has wooden legs and the top is finished with epoxy. I kind of like the hole in the middle of the top.

Blanket Chest
Some friends of mine visited me at Fairport Canal Days 2023 and really liked one of the coffee tables I had on hand. However, that one was sold. I told them I could make one for them. When we got to talking about the size, shape, wood etc. it turns out they really wanted a blanket chest that could be used as a coffee table. This is what came out of those conversations. The entire chest is made out of cherry with the top being one solid piece with a lot of figure to it. It measures about 48″ long, 18″ deep and 19″ tall.

M&M Table
A customer of mine had a very large ash tree cut down from their backyard. They saved one slice of it. This slice was between 3 and 4 inches thick. This is typically called a “cookie”. We let it dry out for a couple of years and then I made this table out of it. While it was drying out, we talked about what would hold it up. We came up with the idea of using a stump from another (smaller) ash tree. A former neighbor of mine had about 100 ash trees on his new property that had died because of the Emerald Ash Bore and let me take my pick. I took 3 and showed them to my customer. They picked one out and I let that sit around for a while to dry. Once everything was dry, I flattened the cookie to give it a consistent thickness, sanded it, stained it (the stain matched other furniture they have) then covered it with epoxy. The base (i.e. the stump) has lots of coats of Tung Oil as a finish. It’s about 40 inches around and 18 inches high.
I hope you like it.

Mixed Species Coffee Table
The legs to this table were given to me by my Father-in-law who used to work for Kittinger Furniture. The legs themselves are mahogany and the struts between the legs are cherry. I had a lot of thick scraps lying around so that’s what I used to make the top. There’s some cherry, maple, ash, mahogany, padauk, purpleheart, oak, walnut and a couple of other things I can’t identify. The top is about 1.5″ thick. The overall dimensions are 35.5″ wide, 22″ deep and 15″ tall.

Cherry Coffee Table
I met some people at the 2022 Fairport Canal Days show and they asked me to build them 2 nightstands and a coffee table, all made out of cherry. They wanted a simple design with each piece having a single shelf. Here is the coffee table (see the “Tables” page for the nightstands). The top of this table is 19 inches wide and is one solid piece of wood (not several glued together).

The 183 Table
I call this the 183 table because the top is made up of 183 individual pieces of ash. This was made completely from scraps. I was intending on building a top for a new bench in my shop but when I started to put this together, I couldn’t resist turning it into a coffee table. This table measures 17 inches wide, 40 inches long and 16 1/2 inches tall.

The 238 Table
Like the 183 table, this table is made up of individual pieces of wood. In this case, 238 pieces of cherry scraps. It has an epoxy finish. Note that there is one small imperfection in the epoxy. The table measures 16 1/2 inches wide, 46 1/2 inches long and 16 1/2 inches tall.

Cherry Coffee Table
A friend of ours wanted a coffee table big enough to sit around and play games with the kids. They decided on a table 2.5 feet by 4.5 feet (kind of big for a coffee table but nice for a game table). They saw the table I made out of thin strips of cherry (see below) and wanted something like that but left it up to me to be “artistic”. Well, this is what I came up with. It’s made out of cherry with bird’s eye maple around the edges and down the middle. The base is narrow enough that you can sit on floor around and under it a little (perfect for playing games).

Bowling Alley Coffee Table
A while back I was poking around on CraigsList and found someone in Buffalo selling 10 foot long pieces of bowling alleys. I couldn’t resist. I bought 3 pieces that had come from “Thruway Lanes”. I had in mind that I had never build a shuffle board table and thought that this would be the perfect way to do so. I built the shuffle board table (see elsewhere on this site for details) and had some pieces left over. I used one of these pieces to build this coffee table. My son really liked it so it’s now his. By the way, I still have some pieces of bowling ally hanging around and could build another shuffle board table, desk, bench etc. I’d love to know what you think.

Cherry coffee table made from scraps
This coffee table is made from all cherry. The top is small scraps that I had from previous projects. It is finished with tung oil. This table was donated to a Chinese auction to raise money for 13Thirty (http://13thirty.org/ ), a charity to raise money for cancer patients between the ages of 13 and 30.

Tiger Maple top with black legs
I was working with someone who’s dad did custom woodworking. His dad was moving down to either North or South Carolina (I can’t remember which) to take a job doing custom boat interiors and was selling off some of his lumber. He had a whole pile of maple that he sold me. Well, the top of this table came from that pile and it’s beautiful!!!.
This table measures 44″ long, 13″ wide and 19″ tall. The size of this piece makes it useful as a coffee table or as a bench. The top of this piece is one solid piece, not several glued together. The wood is tiger maple, or often called curly maple. It has A LOT of character. The legs are made out of cherry but have been dyed black using India Ink. The top was finished with a series of products that allowed the character of the maple to come thru. Some say that this process makes the stripes “pop”. The entire piece was then finished with several coats of tung oil.
I think the contract between the almost white of the maple against the black of the legs came out pretty nice. I still have a lot of this kind of maple along with a lot of birds eye maple if your interested in a project.

Cherry coffee table with pipe legs
Once again I had a lot of cherry scraps laying around (seems like I don’t like throw wood away) so I built a table. I wanted to try using ¾ inch pipes for the legs. After I purchased the components for the legs, I discovered that the table was too narrow. I had to either cut the pipes or make the table bigger so I added a boarder around the outside. This table measures 49″ long, 22.5″ wide and 18″ tall. This piece has been finished with several coats of Tung oil.

Live edge cherry coffee table
This was a custom coffee table made from one slab of 1 ¾ inch thick cherry with a “live edge”. The base is also made out of cherry. It measures roughly 52 inches long, 34 inches wide and 17 inches high. It has an epoxy finish on the top and a Tung Oil finish on the rest.

Thin strip cherry coffee table
The same person that I made the Multi wood species kitchen table for also needed a coffee table. This table was made out of thin scraps of cherry and finished with several coats of Tung oil

Live edge cherry coffee table with epoxy finish
This table is made of solid cherry. The top is all one piece and has an epoxy finish that give is a very durable finish with a high gloss. It had several cracks and imperfections that have been filled / stabilized using epoxy. The legs of the base are on a slight angle and the table has a shelf. The top has an epoxy finish while the rest of the table is finished with tung oil.

Live edge cherry coffee table
This table is 56 inches long, 15 inches wide and 17 inches tall. The top is one piece of wood which had several cracks and imperfections that have been filled / stabilized using epoxy. The legs of the base are on a slight angle and the table has a shelf. The entire table has been finished with tung oil.

Live edge coffee table
The tops of these 2 live edge coffee tables are made from solid cherry. Each measures roughly 56″ long, 15″ wide and 17″ tall. The tops are one single piece of wood which has several cracks and imperfections that have been filled / stabilized using epoxy. The simple legs of the base are on a slight angle. The tables were then finished with Tung oil.
