Matched Set

Just finished a coffee table and matching TV stand. These are made out of pine that come off a tree in front of cabin 8 at https://www.facebook.com/morningsidecamps/.

Cherry end tables

I had a cherry end table on display at Fairport Canal Days (2023) and a gentleman really liked it and wanted me to build him a second one. Well, cherry likes to change color over time so if I build him just one, then they wouldn’t match. So, I built him a matching set. I got the wood for this project from an auction a while back. I’ve never seen cherry look quite like this which (from my point of view) makes these end tables unique.

The Vinyard table

This was a custom order, made with rough cut walnut with whitewashed legs. It measures 54″ long and 36″ wide. Because the wood is all rough cut and not planed smooth, there are many imperfections – just what the customer wanted. I hope you like it as well.

Farmhouse table – barnwood

I always wanted to build a farmhouse table made out of barn wood but never did. That was until I met someone at Fairport Canal Days in 2022. They knew just wanted they wanted, and I just happened to have the materials on hand. They wanted a table that was 60 inches long, 36 inches wide and 30 inches high made out of barn wood. They did not want it smooth, they loved knots and cracks. They wanted the base “whitewashed”. After working with them on multiple occasions, this is what we came up with. The pieces for the top were first cleaned with a power washer, then sanded with a flutter sander (sometimes called a mop sander). This softened it up but did not make it flat. The top was then finished with several coats of Tung Oil. The base is made out of pine. It was first sanded smooth, then got a coat of sanding sealer followed by a dark brown (walnut) stain. I then made a 50/50 mixture of water and white paint, applied a coat and immediately wiped off some of that paint with a paper towel (that was a tricky part, didn’t want it to look streaky). I think it came out pretty interesting.

Nightstands

I met some people at the 2022 Fairport Canal Days show and they asked me to build them 2 nightstands and a coffee table, all made out of cherry. They wanted a simple design with each piece having a single shelf. Here are the nightstands (see the “Coffee Tables” page for the coffee tables). The top of this each of these and the shelves came from the same piece of lumber and are solid pieces (not several glued together).

Cookie tables

A couple of years ago a customer came to me with 3 wooden “cookies” cut from an ash tree from his yard. For those that don’t know, a wooden cookie is a slice of a log taken horizontally showing the rings of the tree. I immediately sealed these to prevent cracking (something very common when logs are cut this way). The pieces then had to sit and dry which took roughly 2 years. When finally dry, I put several coats of a marine based finish (the kind that’s used on boats) and added some hairpin legs. Here are the results. Note that the real trick to these is getting the sealer on are soon as possible to prevent cracking.

Cherry parts table

I’m not sure when I made the top to this table. Maybe around 2014 or so? The top is made out of scraps of cherry I had laying around; it was kind of like a big puzzle. I didn’t make any legs for it so it sat around for a while. Actually, I put a cover on it and used it for more surface space in my finishing room. Over time some of the pieces moved (as wood tends to do) and it was no longer flat. Not real bad but not real smooth either. In Dec. of 2021 I sanded the entire surface, taking off the finish and attempting to make it smooth again. It came out better than it was, but my guess is that because there are so many parts involved, it will move again over time. Anyway, when I refinished the top, I also found a design for some legs I really liked. Well, it’s done now, and I hope you like it.

Side table in walnut and cherry

A couple that purchased a coffee table from me at Fairport Canal Days this year (2021) came to me with a request to build a side table. After working with them on choosing a piece of wood for the top and shelf (they came over to my shop and went through several options) this is what we came up with. The frame is made of walnut and the rest is cherry. The table measures 19 x 19 and is 29 inches tall. I used Odies Oil for the finish. This finish really made the top pop.

End Table

A while back I made a pair of walnut end table for our cousin that was getting married (see walnut end tables below). At the time I cut the pieces for 4 more tables. This is one of those tables. The top is birds eye maple and the legs and shelf are cherry. It measures 24″ x 24″ and is 24″ high.

The finish on the maple top was a bit challenging but I like the final product.

Replica Side Tables

A customer of mine came to me with a side table that has been in his family for decades. He also had some lumber from a walnut tree that had been taken down from his yard. He wanted 4 new tables made out of that walnut that looked like the table that has been in his family. He can now give these tables to his kids and say that these are replicas of the one that has been in the family but were made out of that walnut tree that was in the yard of the house you grew up in. Pretty cool huh?

Square kitchen table

One of our neighbors has a large family (5 kids of their own and 8 adopted, yes 8 adopted). They were in need of a new kitchen table and because these people have done such an outstanding service to the community by giving homes to 8 kids that really needed a home, I build them this table for free. It measures 54 x 54 and is made of cherry. It a very simple design but fits into their kitchen and they will hopefully serve many meals at that table. I only wish I could do more for these wonderful people.

Walnut end tables

Our cousin Kelly got married last summer to Travis. As usual, I told them they could have anything that I currently had in stock or if there was nothing that fit their needs then I would build something for them. After a while we came up with a plan and the walnut end table shown here were born. These tables are 30 inches deep, 24 inches wide and 24 inches high. They have a tung oil finish.

When I was building these I also made a few extras. Those aren’t done yet but I have all the parts cut out for one in cherry, one in maple and 2 with maple tops and cherry bottoms (all the maple tops are birds eye maple). Each of these will be different sizes (depending on the materials I had available). All have the same design and the walnut ones shown here. If you think you may be interested in any of these extras, let me know and I will move them up in my production queue.

The P&I Table

I call this the P&I table after the people I built it for. The top is made of curly maple and cherry. The base is made out of cherry. The 2 outside pieces are from the same board. It measures roughly 60 inches long by 32 inches wide and 32 inches tall. The finish on this was really tough to get right but I’m happy with the results. The stripes of the maple really pop. One friend of mine thought it looked like the ribbon candy we used to get when we were kids.

Black & White Display Table

The light-colored wood on the top and shelf of this table is tiger maple, sometimes called striped maple or curly maple. The drawer front is birds eye maple and the black parts are cherry which has been dyed black using India Ink. A somewhat elegant piece. The top of this table is 15 inches wide, 11.5 inches deep and is 36 inches tall. It’s finished with Tung oil.

The rainbow table

When my son who is an artist, first saw this table, his first words were “it’s like a rainbow”.  Mother Nature did an awesome job with the wood that went in to this table.  Of all the things I’ve ever build, I think this is the most beautiful.  The range of colors is amazing.  There are actually some blues along with greys, browns and yellows.  The table measures 6 feet long, 4 ½ feet wide and 28 inches tall (yea, it’s kind of big).  It’s made of walnut.  It was delivered with a bench on one side and will soon have a corner bench on two of the other sides.

End tables in cherry

This matched pair of end tables are made of cherry and feature mortise and tenon joinery. The tops are one solid piece and both tops came from the same board. This piece measures 19 inches by 19 inches and is 22.75 inches tall.

Multi wood species kitchen table

A friend of mine needed a kitchen table but wanted something “different”.  I had a lot of scraps laying around so I put a bunch of them together to make this table.  There are pieces of cherry, maple, walnut, ash, oak and butternut. The legs are made out of 4×4 pine that has been painted black.  The table measures roughly 6 feet long, 3 ½ feet wide and 28 inches high.

Maple End table

This table has the base made from some very nice splatted maple. The top measures 24″ x 30″ and is made from birds eye maple. This table is finished with Tung oil.

Cherry / Maple End table

This one has a birds eye maple top with a cherry base and measures 22″ x 24″ and is finished with Tung oil.

Cherry end table

Another one is made from cherry and measures 16″ x 24″.

End table in walnut

This end table is made of walnut and features mortise and tenon joinery. The top is one solid piece of wood. This piece measures 19 inches by 19 inches and is 22.75 inches tall.
