I was working on a few different prototypes, one was for a new pattern for some of my end grain cutting boards, a different way to build a box and a technique for covering up some joints with a single piece of wood.

In doing all this I had some parts so I put them together and this is what came out.

The top is birds eye maple, the frame is walnut and the inlay is walnut, cherry and maple. The box measures 11.5″ x 6.5″ and is 5″ tall.

I have some ideas for improvements that I will be giving a try soon.

Birds eye maple and walnut box

I was prototyping the build of some boxes. I was playing around with various ways to make frame one type of wood around another type to make the sides. This box doesn’t use any fancy joinery, just simple butt joints. For a prototype it came out okay. I wouldn’t build it this way again, i.e. I learned some things along the way which was the purpose of the exercise. Here’s the result:
